If You're Not Fit, What's Your Excuse?
Story by: Lynda D. Pendland / photos by: Herb Bias November 2003
Two years ago, at age 30, I took a snapshot of where my physical health was. I was plagued by a nagging shoulder injury from a car accident; pregnancy weight left over from my second child; sporadic eating patterns; stressed over all of it, and so on. Although it would have been easier to play the victim of my circumstances, I knew that in reality those were only excuses to remain complacent with my situation. I asked myself, if nothing changed, where would I be in 5 or 10 years? I had been involved in athletics of some sort early on, from ‘20 Minute Workouts’ and track in high school, to participating in ‘Corporate Challenge’ events at my job. Skipping a meal here and there was all it ever took for me to drop any unwanted pounds. However, it seemed as though my age and metabolism set out to teach me a lesson. At that point in my life I realized that I needed to take a different approach to improving my health and physical fitness. Drawing on strength from the Lord and putting my faith into action, I set out to make some changes.
I sought information to educate myself about the proper way to eat and exercise. At Vedas (formerly Keyfit) post-rehabilitation and personal training, I received rehab for my shoulder, a work-out plan, which incorporated strength training (yes, weight –lifting ladies) and nutritional guidance to improve my diet. I will tell the women now…weight lifting will not make you look like a man or make you into an Incredible Hulk.
